Why Your Mindset is Key to Health
More Than Physical
These days, we’re bombarded with many ideas of what it means to be ‘healthy. But what does it mean to be ‘healthy’? Is it going to the gym every day? Have glowing hair and skin? Drinking green juices? Walking 10,000 daily steps? How about wearing jogging shoes from dawn until dusk?!
The difference between health and appearance often needs clarification. Health can also get confused with wellness. And there’s the term ‘welling’, which has slightly different connotations- go figure!
So, let’s delve into Wellness for Beginners!
What Actually is Health?
If asked, ‘What is health? We will come up with a different version of that question. We all have our personal idea of what good health and well-being are.
There is nothing more important than looking after yourself. How can you do the things you need to and be energetic, fit, and feel well if you don’t care for yourself?
The problem is that some people judge their health based on how they look. For example, their body shape and size are not always a sure indicator of wellness and health. We are all different! Just because someone is bigger or smaller than someone else doesn’t imply they are healthier or unhealthier. There is a lot we don’t know and cannot see.
As far as your bodily health is concerned, your health provider is the best place to go for advice on your health. General good health includes your spirit and soul (mind& body). Whatever works for you, your journey ought to begin with a healthy mindset.
Step One
Your mindset is central to your wellness and health. Improving upon your mindset is the first step on your wellness journey. Without your commitment to your health, anything you try will probably work, and it will not last. To start you off on your journey, let’s begin with DDM.
Decide – A healthy mindset is establishing that healthy living is about respecting your mind and body and nurturing your spirit. Make a positive and informed decision to look after your health while remembering that what goes into your body and what you do with it can affect your mind and spirit (the essence of you) because everything’s connected.
Do– A healthy mindset is taking charge of your health and taking consistent daily action to care for yourself.
Maintain- A healthy mindset is about maintaining general health to adapt to your mind, body, and spirit growth and change.

How to Achieve a Healthy Mindset
A healthy mindset is a mental state characterized by positive thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. A healthy mindset consistently. A positive outlook, staying optimistic even during challenges, fostering good relationships, and being resilient all lead to a healthy mindset.
Here are some tips for achieving a healthy mindset:
Cultivate positivity: Focus on the good things in life and practice gratitude regularly, even for the small things.
Manage stress: Take breaks, breathe deeply, try relaxation techniques, and do activities that bring you happiness.
Practice mindfulness: Tune in to the present moment and be aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
Build strong relationships: Nurture supportive relationships with people who uplift and encourage you.
Exercise regularly: Physical activity releases endorphins, which can help enhance mood and reduce stress.
Pursue personal growth: Have fun, engage in activities that inspire you and help you learn more about yourself and the world.
Everyone’s journey to a healthy mindset is unique, so be patient and kind to yourself. Don’t hesitate to seek support if you need to. Seek support from trusted friends, family members, or a professional counsellor if you are struggling.
You Have the Power!
If you view your mind like you do your body, it will be easier to understand how to look after it. Your mind is not an automatic pilot where it steers you without any decision-making. As an autonomous being, you have the power of choice to decide how to maintain your health. And that power needs to be exercised daily.
When you have healthy thinking, you will have a healthy mindset. Emotions can get bottled up when we go through difficult things without a way to express them. Bottling things up can cause unhelpful reactions to our mind or body, creating an unhealthy mindset. If this happens, finding support may help you.
You exercise your power when you seek a therapist, play a sport, create art, find a way to express your emotions or set wellness goals. If you have lost your power and want to get it back, you need to be your wellness coach.
My Journey with Self-Care
I’m a huge fan of self-care. I decided to take responsibility for my health when I was sixteen. I have managed to maintain this, for the most part, till the present.
I don’t only depend upon the professionals to care for me; I take responsibility for my health. During the off-and-on COVID lockdowns here in Wales, accessing professional health care was impossible! So I took responsibility for my wellness and health. I became my own wellness coach, which got me through the most challenging times of sickness, aloneness and depression.
Regular self-care is about maintaining good health and prevention. If we have a healthy mindset, we will DECIDE, DO and MAINTAIN to prevent burnout, stress, and exhaustion. A huge part of having a good mindset is listening to and treating your body with love and respect. If your body needs a break, let it rest. If you need energy, move your body. If your body needs sustenance, eat a healthy meal. Do the things that help you feel your best!
