Six Easy Steps to Achieving a Healthy Mindset -Where Your Wellness Journey Ought to Begin.

These days, we’re bombarded with many ideas of what it means to be ‘healthy. But what does it mean to be ‘healthy’? Is it going to the gym every day? Have glowing hair and skin? Drinking green juices? Walking 10,000 daily steps? How about wearing jogging shoes from dawn until dusk?!

The difference between health and appearance often needs clarification. Health can also get confused with wellness. And there’s the term ‘welling’, which has slightly different connotations- go figure.

More Than Physical

Some people judge their health level on how they look, for example, their body shape and size, but this is only sometimes a sure indicator. Everyone is different, and just because someone is bigger or smaller than someone else doesn’t mean they are healthier or unhealthier. There is a lot we don’t know and cannot see.

Nothing is more important than looking after yourself. If you don’t look after yourself, how can you be energetic, fit, and well to maintain your world’s responsibilities or look after others?

If asked, ‘What does it mean to be healthy,’ each of us will come up with our own version of that question; we all have our personal version of what optimum health and well-being are.

As far as your bodily health is concerned, your health provider is the best place to go for advice on your optimum health should be. General good health, spirit, and soul (mind& body), whatever it may look like for you, your journey ought to begin with a healthy mindset.

Your mindset is central to your wellness and health. Improving upon your mindset is the first step on your wellness journey. Without your commitment to your health, anything you try will probably work and not last. To start you off on your journey, let’s begin with D.D.M.

D-Decide  A healthy mindset is establishing that healthy living is about respecting your mind and body and nurturing your spirit. Make a positive and informed decision to look after your health while remembering that what goes into your body and what you do with it can affect your mind and spirit (the essence of you) because everything’s connected.

D-DoA healthy mindset is taking charge of your health and taking consistent daily action to care for yourself.

M-Maintain- A healthy mindset is about maintaining overall health to adapt to your mind, body, and spirit growth and change.

Six Easy Steps to Achieving a Healthy Mindset

A healthy mindset is a mental state characterized by positive thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It involves consistently having a positive outlook, staying optimistic even during challenges, fostering good relationships, and being resilient. Here are some tips for achieving a healthy mindset:

  1. Cultivate positivity: Focus on the good things in life and practice gratitude regularly, even for the small things.
  2. Manage stress: Take breaks, breathe deeply, try relaxation techniques, and do activities that bring you happiness.
  3. Practice mindfulness: Tune in to the present moment and be aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment.
  4. Build strong relationships: Nurture supportive relationships with people who uplift and encourage you.
  5. Exercise regularly: Physical activity releases endorphins, which can help enhance mood and reduce stress.
  6. Pursue personal growth: Have fun, engage in activities that inspire you and help you learn more about yourself and the world.

Everyone’s journey to a healthy mindset is unique, so be patient and kind to yourself. Seek support from trusted friends, family members, or a professional counsellor if you struggle.

You Have the Power!

If you view your mind like you do your body, it will be easier to understand how to look after it. Your mind is not an automatic pilot where it steers you without any decision-making. As an autonomous being, you have the power of choice to decide how to maintain your health. And that power needs to be exercised daily.

When you have healthy thinking, you will have a healthy mindset. Whether seeking a therapist, playing a sport, creating art, finding a way to express your emotions, or setting wellness goals, you can be your own wellness coach.

When we go through difficult things without a way to express them, emotions can get bottled up and cause adverse reactions in our minds or bodies.

I’m a huge fan of self-care. I don’t leave it to the health professionals to care for me; I take responsibility for my health. During the off-and-on COVID lockdowns here in Wales, accessing professional health care was impossible! So, taking responsibility for my wellness and health, I became my own wellness coach, who got me through the most challenging times of sickness, aloneness and depression.

In Summary

Regular self-care is about maintaining good health and prevention.

If we have a healthy mindset, we will DECIDE, DO and MAINTAIN to prevent burnout, stress, and exhaustion.

A huge part of having a good mindset is listening to and treating your body with love and respect. If your body needs a break, let it rest. If you need energy, move your body. If your body needs sustenance, eat a healthy meal. Do the things that help you feel your best!
