Why I Eat the Keto Way

It’s common for individuals, including women, to start a ketogenic (keto) diet for various reasons. I started eating Keto as a lifestyle change in 2020.

The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate eating plan that aims to shift the body into ketosis, primarily burning fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Here are some common reasons I choose to Eat the Keto Way

Weight loss

As I age, my metabolism has slowed down, and gaining a few extra pounds has resulted. One of the primary reasons people, including women, adopt the keto diet is for weight loss. By reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing fat consumption, the body enters a state of ketosis, leading to increased fat burning. I’ve maintained a healthy weight by reducing my carbs and found new vigour!

Improved energy levels

Like many other women, I have found that eating the keto way helps me stabilize my energy levels throughout the day. By relying on fats for energy, there can be less fluctuation in blood sugar levels compared to a diet high in carbohydrates. The bonus is that I don’t get tired in the afternoon, so I can continue at the same pace I started in the morning.

Hormonal balance

I am way past having to worry about hormones, but some women believe that a keto diet can help regulate hormonal imbalances, particularly in conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, individual responses to dietary changes can vary; consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable.

Mental clarity and focus

Some individuals, both men and women, report improved mental clarity and focus on a keto diet. This is definitely true for me. At 69, I returned to university and found my concentration level high. I tend to suffer from brain fog- but no more – thanks to my low-carb and high-protein intake. The brain can efficiently use ketones (produced during ketosis) as an alternative fuel source.

Reduced inflammation

have arthritis, which is an inflammatory disease. I have found that eating Keto has helped me reduce inflammation in my body, and therefore, I have less pain and more mobility. You may also benefit because Keto could potentially benefit different kinds of arthritis or other inflammatory disorders.

Blood sugar control

For women with insulin resistance or those at risk of type 2 diabetes, the keto diet may help in improving blood sugar control by reducing carbohydrate intake and stabilizing insulin levels.

Appetite control

The high-fat and moderate-protein content of the keto diet may help some women feel more satiated, potentially leading to reduced overall calorie intake.

I do not need to overeat now as I feel full quickly and satisfied. I eat when I am hungry, not when I think I should. That’s why my body’s needs are in control, not my fickle mind!

It’s important to note that individual responses to the keto diet can vary, and it may not be suitable for everyone.

Before starting any eating regime, especially one as restrictive as Keto, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian to ensure that it aligns with your health goals and needs.

Additionally, long-term adherence and potential side effects should be considered when embarking on any dietary changes, partly if you are on medications of any sort.
