Finding Solace in Silence. There is no trouble or turmoil in a place of peace and quiet. The quiet place is where you can completely let go of the busyness of the day and enjoy an undisturbed breather. This rest space is like a green pasture and still water of tranquillity. Your quiet place offers an even flow and calmness.
The Problem of Guilt
Finding Solace in Silence can help you stop being busy. Do you feel guilty when resting because you have a million things to do? You have a busy schedule, so you must get on with things. There’s no time to stop, reflect or rest. Does this ring any bells??
As humans, we adapt to the hustle and bustle of life and have lost the art of rest. I know many people who have retired but have not retired in their minds and hearts. They complain they are busier in retirement than when working full time. Are You Too Busy?
Stroke Can Happen at Any Age.
Mary is a pastor’s wife I knew many years ago. Mary had young children to run after, so she didn’t stop from when she awoke to when she went to bed.
Mary never found solace in silence as she always enjoyed being busy. Mary never gave herself a day off or did anything that pleased her. If she wasn’t working at home or at her paid employment, she was working in the Church to support her pastor husband.
I was shocked, but not surprised when I heard that Mary had suffered a debilitating stroke. She was only 34 years of age and never fully recovered.
If only Mary had planned into her day a time to find solace in silence to discover her quiet place for soulful rejuvenation
Is Retirement Wearing You Out-Finding Solace in Silence
Has your retirement become hard work? It’s nice to have something to get up in the morning for. However, as we age, our bodies and minds need more rest and calmness than ever to rejuvenate. We need to rejuvenate for our ongoing holistic well-being.
In retirement, it is great to be needed by someone or something on one level. Most of us at any age agree that we need a reason to get out of bed in the morning and have something to look forward to each day.
Learning new things and accepting new challenges that stretch us. Challenges aid our personal growth, which is lovely. However, many people’s minds are still in employment mode and can’t stop or find rest.
Don’t Set yourself Up for a Heart Attack
I know a lovely couple who are in their mid-80s. They have been retired from their professions for many years. Betty is busy all morning with household chores and running errands. Betty gets tired easily these days. But she feels guilty when she sits down to rest in the afternoon, so she keeps on her feet till bedtime.
Betty finds it impossible to slow down because her mind and heart are still in the habit of operating in work mode. She has not created new habits or routines to suit her retirement. Is it any wonder she suddenly had a massive heart attack! And now Betty is quite incapacitated and pumped up on medications with many side effects,
The family doctor told her that her condition was due to stress. The stress was caused by a lack of rest, putting tremendous strain on her heart and causing it to fail.
Betty received her diagnosis revealing high stress levels causing her blood pressure to rocket. The sudden rising of blood pressure has caused a clot which in turn caused the stroke. She literally wore herself out!
Betty was exhausted but didn’t recognise it because she never stopped to evaluate her actions. Betty should have given consideration to her health and wellness. This is indeed a sober lesson for us all.
If Betty had stopped momentarily. If she looked for solace in silence. She might have been well today if she purposed to discover her quiet place for soulful rejuvenation.
Let the Grass Grow Under Your Feet-Finding Solace in Silence
Now meet Max, who, after retirement, wanted to take up running and other healthy pursuits. While working, his schedule was 12 hours of solid work, leaving little room for healthy pursuits.
But now a fit 70-year-old Max has retired from the office. He didn’t want the grass to grow under his feet, so Max thought he could do even more work because he didn’t waste time travelling.
But the problem for Max is that he continued to stick to his office work schedule to give him a structure for his day. Max was fearful of being at a loose end. He thought of creating a new structure to suit his retirement plans.
Max was happy; he accomplished more at home than in the office in a day. He always said that he wanted to wear out and not rust out. So, Max created a tight daily schedule and routine that gave him no time to sit and rest. He never thought he might need to create a quiet place to rejuvenate his soul.
In the end, Max was putting upon himself a heavy workload and was so busy that he could not fit into his much-wanted running program.
Then one day, Max, on the spur of the moment, without any preparation, he decided to do a vigorous run. Max reasoned that he had to start sometime, so he geared up in running shoes and shorts, which was a huge mistake.
Max had little time to spare, so he ran flat out to reach his goal without warming up and taking things slow. A mile from his home, Max was found dead on the pavement.
The coroner said that he had a massive heart attack due to great strain upon his heart. Max didn’t take the time to ease himself into gentle exercise until his body adjusted to it. For Max, it was his first run and his last.
Finding Solace in Silence
I could share much more with you. But please remember that all these people have in common is that they abused their bodies. They didn’t care for themselves with rest or relaxation.
These dear folk I mentioned in this article had to get stuff done. Betty, Mary and Max were forever in a hurry to achieve a result.
Of course, we need to enjoy our work. Heading for goals and fulfilling projects is great for our mental health. But we must also balance it with rest, pleasure, and enjoyment, which are all God-given gifts.
So, when things get too hectic. When your body needs replenishing. When the soul needs rest. Be rejuvenated by the still waters and lie in the green pastures in God’s love.
The Lord knows what it takes to lead you to a peaceful resting place. Everyone needs tranquillity and calmness, so let yourself be led there. When you are tired, worn out and weary, you can’t help yourself, let alone anyone else.
We need to change our mindset by educating ourselves about consciously replenishing ourselves. In so doing, we replenish our creative selves. Julia Cameron, who wrote The Artist Way, calls this filling the well; only you can fill your well.
